Creeping landslides may fail catastrophically, posing significant threats to infrastructure and lives. Landslides weaken over time through rock mass damage processes that may occur by steady-state creep or transient accelerations of slip, called creep bursts. Creep bursts may control landslide stability by inducing short-term damage and strain localization. This study focuses on the Åknes landslide in Norway, which moves up to 6 cm per year and could potentially trigger a large tsunami in the fjord below. An 11-year data set is compiled and analyzed, including kinematic, seismic, and hydrogeological data acquired at the landslide surface and in a series of boreholes. An annual average of two creep bursts with millimeter amplitude has been recorded within the shear zone in each borehole, accounting for approximately 11% of the total displacement. Creep bursts detected simultaneously in multiple boreholes are preceded by increased seismic activity and rising water pressure. However, most creep bursts are observed in only one or a few boreholes. These bursts often happen during seasonal high and low groundwater levels in autumn and spring, respectively, correlating with local peaks in water pressure. No such correlation is observed during summer. We propose that creep bursts can have different causes and hypothesize that rock degradation leads to some creep bursts independent of water pressure variations. In contrast, the largest creep bursts are correlated with variations in absolute water pressure or gradients of water pressure within the shear zone. Our findings emphasize the complexity of a dense data set requiring multiple mechanisms to explain creep burst dynamics.

The Amami-Sankaku Basin, located in the Philippine Sea, records approximately 50 million years of sediment accumulation and diagenesis of volcanic ash derived from the Kyushu-Palau and Kyushu-Ryukyu arcs. Analyses of porewater and sediment samples from the 1461-m core recovered at IODP Expedition 351, Site U1438, included major and trace elements, strontium radiogenic isotope ratio ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr), and taxonomic identification of archaeal classes and bacterial orders. Sediment X-ray diffraction and thin section analyses show that smectite, zeolites and chlorite are the main authigenic minerals. A multicomponent solute diffusion and reaction numerical model was developed to simulate the long-term diagenesis that took place in this sedimentary sequence and to account for the transition to a calcium chloride brine at about 670 mbsf. Numerical results indicate that 45% of the initial amount of volcanic ash has been dissolved at 750 mbsf. At this depth, 13% of the initial water (H 2 O) in the pore space is estimated to have been transferred to the solid phase by the formation of zeolites, which accounts for an increase in porewater chloride concentration. In contrast, dissolution of anorthite and volcanic ash combined with sodium uptake by zeolites accounts for the predominance of calcium in the brine. In the upper 160 m of the sedimentary column, the electrochemical migration of solutes causes chloride to move in the opposite direction of the concentration gradient, i.e., uphill diffusion, sustaining downward diffusion of seawater chloride into the sediments.

The Grande da Pipa River (GPR) basin (Portugal) has natural conditions that favor the
occurrence of landslides. The hydrological year 2009/10 was characterized by high amounts
of rainfall, which led to the occurrence of an also high number of landslides in this basin.
The hydrodynamic character of the GPR basin was analyzed through a lumped parameter model
of daily sequential water balances, in order to understand its influence in the stability of natural
slopes. Results from the model were confronted to the inventory of landslides that occurred in
the basin during the hydrological year 2009/10. Morphological, geotechnical, and hydrological
local conditions affecting slope stability were also analyzed through back-analyses of two selected
deep-seated landslides. Data here presented shows that the rise of water table is an important
triggering factor for landslides. The most important constraint for landslides in the area is the degree
of weathering and thickness of the upper layer of degraded marls. In most of the basin, the degraded
layer is less than 5 m deep, causing the occurrence of shallow and intermediate landslides. However,
deep-seated landslides were also found in areas, even with degraded marls that were less than
5 m-thick, where landslides have also occurred in the past.
