Halos of devoured galaxies may reveal the nature of dark matter

When researchers examined ribs from extinct ichthyosaurs, they were surprised by how heavy and dense they were. Perhaps the extra weight helped them reach the depths, much like divers’ lead belts.

When drought strikes: What can we learn from Norwegian media about the consequences?
Large parts of Northern Europe experienced extreme drought in 2018. Hydrologists at University of Oslo have searched Norwegian media for drought impact reports from 2000 to 2018 in order to better understand its consequences.

An oil spill threatened the library’s underground storage. That’s when researchers found a fungus that can release the oil.
Now they are working on scaling up the process.

Trust the Rocks! A fun geology day with workshops for the whole family during Forskningsdagene Oct. 9, 2026 12:18 PM
Through experiments and play, researchers from the University of Oslo brought geoscience closer to visitors of all ages. The event took place at the Climate House, with several stations offering interactive activities and workshops. Many happy 3–6-year-olds enjoyed Trust the Rocks! that day!

Million funding from FRIPRO for exploring Earth’s magnetic field and its significance for life Sep. 29, 2026 4:33 PM
Researcher Leandro Gallo at the Centre for Planetary Habitability (PHAB), Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, has received funding from the Research Council of Norway for an early-career project. The Polestar project will explore Earth’s magnetic field and how it has evolved over geological time.
