MISC - Oslo supervisors
Dirk Linke
My expertise
My expertise is on bacterial cell surface proteins, specifically on bacterial adhesion factors and bacterial transport proteins. My research group focuses on Gram-negative pathogens, and how surface proteins act in the infection process.
Methods used in my lab/group
The research group specializes in protein expression and purification, functional assays such as adhesion assays, biofilm assays, and enzymatic assays, as well as in various sample preparation techniques for structural biology (including NMR; Electron Microscopy, and x-ray crystallography). The group also excels in all related molecular biology experiments, including molecular cloning, and is more and more involved in genome sequencing for more exotic pathogens.
My involvement with the MISC project
I started this initiative together with my colleagues Katsutoshi Hori (Japan) and Enguo Fan (China). We are hoping to build a sustainable, long-term network of collaborators with a joint interest in microbial surface colonization.

My expertise
I am a biochemist, with a master in immunology and a PhD in physiology and function of the human pancreas and gut.
For the past 25 years I have worked with the growth, function and metabolism of mesenchymal derived tissues like bone, muscle, cartilage and fat; in particular the different aspects of adipokines, their expression and effects, and was instrumental in identifying the expression of adipokines (leptin, adiponectin and resistin) in bone. Lately the main focus has been examination of primary human bone cells on biomaterials related to cell signaling, mobility and interaction, and targeted tissue growth, remodeling and quality.
Methods used in my lab/group
Evaluation of growth, viability, and signaling in 2D and 3D cultures of primary human cells of various origin.
Production of artificial human tissues or spheroids using combination of cell types in a rotational bioreactor in vitro.
Immune detection of proteins in cells imaged by an upright confocal microscope or invert microscopes.
Quantitation of proteins in cell culture media, cell lysate or other samples (blood, saliva, etc) using multiplex Luminex and ELISA kits
The list of instruments and capacities available at the Oral Research Laboratory (odont.uio.no).
My involvement with the MISC project
Evaluation of human cell behavior on and cytotoxic effects of substances and/or colonized surfaces.

My expertise
I am a chemical engineering from Imperial College, London and a PhD on polymeric biomaterials from Technische Universität München. I am currently involved in bone graft material/scaffold production, surface modification and intrinsic disorder proteins. Another research interest is debridement of infected implant surfaces.
Methods used in my lab/group
I have mostly been involved in surface characterization by means of profilometer, SEM, FTIR and characterization of porous materials with nano and microCT. Our laboratory has a full list of equipment in the link below.

My expertise
Our research interest focuses mainly on membrane vesicles (MVs) secreted from the bacterial body. We are interested in how these interact with host cells and stimulate host responses. These studies have relevance for vaccine development against intracellular bacterial pathogens. We also have research projects on optimizing the use of antibiotics that have relevance in preventing development of antimicrobial resistance.
Methods used in my lab/group
General equipped lab for microbial molecular biology and performing experiments such as cloning, Western, qPCR, transcriptomics and proteomics. The use of both adult and zebrafish embryos as vaccine and infection model for bacterial infections. Antimicrobial assays.
My involvement with the MISC project
I would like to receive students for internship and also for my student and researchers to take courses or internships abroad in the laboratories that offer complementary expertise.

My expertise
My expertise is on signaling systems in plants. In my group, we specifically study the use of peptide ligands and cell surface receptors in plant development and responses to biotic stress. We focus on understanding how plants can mount cell specific defense responses to plant pathogens.
Methods used in my lab/group
The research group specializes in genetic interaction studies using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, fluorescence microscopy methods for protein interaction studies, bioassays to identify ligand receptor pairs and general molecular methods for studying genes and proteins in plants.
My involvement with the MISC project
We are interested in collaborating with other groups working with microbial pathogens, in particular we would be interested in new methods to study microbe-host interactions. We would be happy to host students and researchers from China and Japan.
