Academic interests

The structural biology group of Ute Krengel uses X-ray crystallography and complementary techniques to gain deep insight into important biological mechanisms and contribute to developing new treatments.The main focus is on proteins of medical interest, and in particular on enzymes and protein-carbohydrate interactions.

Curriculum vitae

Prof. Dr. Ute Krengel studied Chemistry in Göttingen (Germany), and obtained her PhD from the University of Heidelberg in 1991 (structure and molecular mechanism of p21ras). After positions in Toronto (Canada, 1991-1993), Groningen (The Netherlands, 1994-1997), and Gothenburg (Sweden, 1997-2004), she moved to Oslo (Norway), where she holds a full Professorship since 2006. In 2018, she was visiting professor at the ETH, Zurich (Switzerland). Prof. Krengel is particularly interested in molecular mechanisms of disease, including infectious diseases and cancer, with focus on receptor interactions and enzymes. She currently serves as coordinator of Norwegian Block Allocation Groups for Synchrotron Research and as Norwegian representative of the International Glycoconjugate Organization.

Metabolic enzymes, lectins, adhesins, toxins, and anti-cancer antibodies.

Scientific significance and potential applications

Enzymes and protein-carbohydrate interactions are central to many biological processes (e.g., metabolism, cellular signaling and differentiation, cell-cell interaction, and immune response) that are at the core of important diseases. Understanding the roles of carbohydrates in these processes and how they interact with proteins is expected to have a large impact on the development of new treatments against many human diseases.

The work involves the close collaboration with research groups of different specializations (e.g., biochemists, molecular modelers, bioinformaticians, and experts in NMR spectroscoy, cryo-EM and mass spectrometry), thus warranting that the structural characterization of the chosen research targets can be pursued hand in hand with protein engineering and carbohydrate binding studies, molecular simulations, and drug design.
