Alvar har en bred bakgrunn, som inkluderer studier ved Universitetet i Tromsø (Master og PhD), og arbeid ved Norges Geologiske Undersøkelse, Universitetet i Bergen (UNI CIPR Center of Excellence), og Universitetessenteret på Svalbard (UNIS). Professor i strukturgeologi ved Institutt for geofag, UiO fra 2013.
